Our Vineyard Terroir

Vineyards at Knoll

Knoll Vineyards boasts a remarkable vineyard profile and embraces sustainable farming practices, showcasing a deep commitment to the land and its natural resources. With a focus on organic-approved products, we prioritize the health of our vineyard ecosystem and promote the delicate terroir in which our grapes is grown.

Our farming methods reflect our dedication to sustainability, starting with proactive dry farming once the vines have established themselves in their early years. This approach allows the vines to develop deep root systems, accessing water and nutrients from the soil naturally. All aspects of vineyard management, from planting to harvesting, are meticulously performed by hand, ensuring a hands-on approach and attention to detail.

Within our vineyard, we have cultivated several clones of Pinot Noir, including Pommard, 115, 667, 777, 828, and Mariafeld. These diverse clones contribute to the complexity and character of our Pinot Noir wines. In addition, we have recently introduced blocks of Riesling, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay, expanding our varietal offerings and showcasing our commitment to exploration and innovation.

Nestled on a 30-acre plot within our expansive 140-acre property, our vineyards coexist harmoniously with the local wildlife. The surrounding habitat provides a home for a diverse range of creatures, including deer, bear, coyotes, bobcats, cougars, skunks, raccoons, squirrels, and many other smaller animals. We take pride in preserving and nurturing this natural balance, ensuring the vineyard remains a part of a thriving ecosystem.

Water plays a vital role in our vineyard, sourced from a gravity-fed spring that provides a sustainable water supply. We carefully irrigate our young vines from an off-stream reservoir, using water judiciously and responsibly.

Our vineyard soils are predominantly Windygap, known for their favorable characteristics for grape growing. Nestled within a private and protected valley, our vineyard benefits from ideal growing conditions. Located just 36 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, our proximity to the coast allows for cooling afternoon breezes that help prevent powdery mildew pressure. The cool mornings gradually transition into warm afternoons, ripening the fruit perfectly during the late summer and fall.

At Knoll Vineyards, we prioritize environmental stewardship by composting our pomace and utilizing it to nourish our vineyard. While we are not currently certified organic, we practice organic farming methods with the goal of achieving biodynamic farming status in the future. This dedication to sustainable practices not only ensures the health of our vines but also enhances the quality and expression of our wines.

With our vineyard profile and farming methods, we aim to create wines that showcase the unique characteristics of our terroir while maintaining a deep respect for the environment. We invite you to experience the fruits of our labor, sip our exceptional wines, and appreciate the harmony between nature and winemaking.
